Winter’s Bone

I just had a chance to see the Oscar nominations, which were released yesterday.  I was happy to see “127 Hours” on the list, but was particularly happy to see “Winter’s Bone”.

“Winter’s Bone” is one of those relatively unknown gems.  It’s play in Toronto theaters was too brief, so it came an went before I had a chance to catch it, even though it was on my list of must movies to see.  I ended up seeing it in a repertory theatre.  This is a remarkably powerful film and story about life in outback middle America, tracing the story of a young girl forced into a role of maturity beyond her years in order to take care of her younger siblings.

I hope that it’s inclusion on the nominee list will lead to it’s being seen by a wider audience.

I wasn’t totally involved with this story, but the acting and character driven element made me like it more. Still, I think it’s the weakest out of the Best Picture race this year! Good review, check out mine when you can!
