A Crumbling Civilization

It seems that it is becoming more and more apparent that American civilization is crumbling.  Conservative elements are dragging it downward faster than the enlightened elements can pull upwards.  Even Donald Trump is describing the nation as a disgrace and laughing stock.

I love the States.  It is a beautiful country and I have many friends there.  But what we are seeing there now is a dismantling of a civilization.  Here are a few items from just the past few days:

1. The attempted abolition of collective bargaining rights in Wisconsin is only the beginning.  Missouri is determined to return the state to pre-20th Century conditions, putting forth a bill in the state Senate to modify child labour laws.  Here’s the summary:

This act modifies the child labor laws. It eliminates the prohibition on employment of children under age fourteen. Restrictions on the number of hours and restrictions on when a child may work during the day are also removed. It also repeals the requirement that a child ages fourteen or fifteen obtain a work certificate or work permit in order to be employed. Children under sixteen will also be allowed to work in any capacity in a motel, resort or hotel where sleeping accommodations are furnished. It also removes the authority of the director of the Division of Labor Standards to inspect employers who employ children and to require them to keep certain records for children they employ. It also repeals the presumption that the presence of a child in a workplace is evidence of employment.

2.  While many sane Americans are responding to the Japan earthquake by considering a donation to support relief work, there seems to be another response making an appearance on Facebook.  Pearl Harbor was more than six decades ago, people!!  That’s like saying that Hurricane Katrina was retribution for America’s atrocities in Viet Nam.

3.  While there is a lot of controversy about the message in the endofamerica13 video (frequently advertised on CNN), and while there is a lot of dispute whether the investment advice given is a good idea, the main points in this video are very noteworthy.  It paints the U.S. as a country that is so deep in debt that it could not pay off it’s annual budget plus interest on past debt by taxing its population 100%.  It states that the only thing that is saving America right now from the same fate as Greece is the fact that the American dollar is the world currency standard, which puts them in a position to print as much money as they want with limited consequences.  If the world nations choose to ignore that world currency standard, which seems to be the trend, then America would be in deep economic doodoo.  The video is quite long, but I think that if you give it 5 minutes, you’ll be in for the whole thing.
