Michele Bachmann

In a current Macleans article, “Bachmann goes into overdrive”, one of the pictures is of a Bachmann supporter wearing which states “RE-DEFEAT COMMUNISM, 2012”, under which is a picture of Obama with the red circle and line through it.  By these standards, Tea Party supporters in the U.S. must regard Canada as a communist country.  Obamacare is a seriously diluted version of Canadian universal health care.  I don’t really feel like a communist; I rather feel like a person in a country that is trying to practice a degree of social responsibility.  For all of its flaws, most Canadians regard our health care security as being one of our defining characteristics.

And yet, Michelle Bachmann, currently the #2 prospect for Republican presidential candidate nomination, states categorically that she would “not rest until I repeal Obamacare.”  This, in spite of the fact that her office has proclaimed Canada to be a role model for the U.S. in economic policy.  (I wonder if she knows that the kind of regulation of financial institutions that she is opposing is what saved Canada during the recession?)

She is also in favour of a federal constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, which would supersede and nullify those laws being passed by individual states.  Let’s look at this carefully.  She wants to pass an amendment that would prevent states from passing a law granting equal rights.  Isn’t that like building bigotry, prejudice and injustice into the constitution.  I always thought that Constitutional Amendments in the U.S. were about ensuring rights, not subtracting them.

Bachmann is also opposed to regulation of financial institutions, claiming that any regulation will inevitably lead to more job loss.  These are the financial institutions who, for lack of regulation, brought down the economy three years ago, causing the job loss to begin with.

There is no surprise that she is also opposed to abortion under any circumstances, including rape and safeguarding the health of the mother.  And to round it off, she also seems opposed to energy efficiency, stating that “President Bachmann will allow you to buy any light bulb you want.”   Clearly she prefers business interests to environmental interests.

The only thing that doesn’t fit is her opposition to the U.S. involvement in Libyan conflict.  Even though that involvement was limited in nature, she prefers none.  Odd, since I’m guessing that she would be a big supporter of military spending (-this presumption driven by the profile-).  Perhaps she’s opposed to it for no other reason than that it was initiated by Obama.

She is a poster child for the extreme right wing, fundamentalist Christian, neurotic, authoritarian personality.  I can’t help but look at this as a form of mental illness.   She is Sarah Palin with some brains and Ann Coulter with some sanity and tact.

Or perhaps she’s just an opportunistic poser, hoping that her extreme, black and white policies will appeal to enough voters.  She considers Obama, not a bad president, but the “worst President ever!”  There are no grays with this lady.  That in itself should be a huge warning sign.
