For those of you who may have thought that the death threats from Christians exposed in my previous post, “Christians Openly Advocate Killing Atheists” were unrepresentative of fundamentalist Christians, I point out a recent blog post from P.Z. Meyers. Meyers’ blog, Pharyngula, is a great blog, -one of only a few that I check almost every day.
Meyers, recently voted International Humanist Of The Year, picked a battle with creationist Glenn Beck, drawing attention to his pole about creationism and encouraging his supporters to participate in the poll. As a result, he was accused of hijacking the pole, which may or may not be true. Many Internet polls are strongly influenced by people advocating strategic voting on one blog or another. That’s why Internet polls are so unreliable.
However, the Christian Beck supporters decided to have a typical hissy fit, promptly sending hate mail and death threats to Meyers.
I read things like this and watch the speeches of the Republican presidential candidates, and I just can’t help noting the deep hypocrisy and mental imbalance of these people. Someone like Perry wants to withdraw the influence of government on the lives of people, but out of the other side of their mouths want to enact laws telling a woman that she does not have the right to clinical abortion, and want to tell gay couples that they do not have the right to marry, -among many other things such as prayer in public schools. As it is regularly seen with the far right, freedom is an absolute, as long as you agree with them. Otherwise they want the right to tell you what to do, and if you don’t like it they’ll send you hate mail and death threats. As I’ve said before, Fascism is a right wing ideology.
It’s the politics of ignorance, and I’m sure we’ll see a lot of it in the upcoming U.S. elections. The question is, how much will we see in the upcoming Ontario elections? Canadians, look south a realize what extreme conservatism is doing to that country.
