Ya, so that’s what happens when you let the Festival pick the movies for you.

Last night I saw the opening of “From Up On Poppy Hill”, a Japanese animated feature by Goro Miyazaki, son of legendary anime master Hayao Miyazaki (“Princess Mononoke”).  The animated story was quite plain, telling the tale of a teenage girl who falls for a boy at school only to find out that he is her long lost brother.  Ooops.  It sounds like it could be Shakespearean, but it was quaint rather than deep.  The movie is doing quite well in Japan, but with a high attendance of teenage girls.  Not really my cup of tea…  But I didn’t fall asleep and start snoring like the guy behind me.  It got mixed reviews from Toronto reviewers.

I would give the movie a C++

Much more interesting last night was just the festivities on King St. between the LightBox and Roy Thompson Hall.  The party was really happening, and I always find being downtown at night to be exhilarating.  Toronto is such a great city.
