John Hiatt is one of those under-appreciated musicians who deserves more exposure. He shows that the old rockers still have a lot of power and the added benefit of experience. Hiatt divides his songs between country and rock. I can’t say that I’m a fan of the country side, but he always gives the rest of us a few gems that can’t be ignored. The rock material is sometimes gritty and rough around the edges, like “Damn This Town” or “Master of Disaster”, but sometimes smooth and melodic, like many of the songs on his masterpiece 1997 album, Little Head.
The new album reflects all of this, with a little bit of each. Can’t say that I like every song, but there are a few that I love, -which is par for the course for Hiatt.
